Presidential candidate hopeful, Barack Obama, has beaten fellow runner Hilary Clinton in the race for the best website.

The American Web Marketing Association (WMA) judged the pair on the same criteria used to select their annual WebAward winners.

"Interactivity makes a website more than just an online billboard and both candidates were effective in giving visitors to their websites plenty to see and do," the panel noted.

The decision went in favour of Mr Obama after 74.8 per cent voted his site has the "most pleasing design" and is more innovative.

Both candidates in the Democrat's nomination race have utilised electronic media alongside traditional channels to generate publicity and support.

North America has 23.31 per cent of the world 's broadband subscribers, according to analyst, Point Topic's global internet report.

The WMA president, William Rice, noted the importance of the web. He said internet pages would "play an ever increasingly important role in how candidates get their messages across to the American voter".
