In Europe, 250 million people regularly use the internet, according to new research by the EU.

The first results of i2010, the EU's digital-led strategy for growth and jobs, showed an additional 40 million users connected in 2007.

"It is a welcome change of political direction that today, ICT, the main driver of European growth, is being promoted by all 27 EU Member States in their national policies," said Viviane Reding, commissioner for Information Society and Media.

The commission's ICT Progress Report found two-thirds of schools and half of doctors now make use of fast internet connections.

Additionally, 77 per cent of EU businesses had a broadband connection in 2007 (62 per cent in 2005) and 77 per cent used it to deal with banks (70 per cent in 2005).

Ms Redring said the widespread adoption of ICTs would help "Europe compete internationally and modernises the daily lives of Europeans".

According to analysts, PonitTopic, world broadband subscriber figures reached 349.98 million at the end of 2007.
