Tesco will launch an online music store to compete with iTunes.
Consumers will be able to buy MP3 files from the Tesco Digital online music store and choose from 3.3 million tracks.
Graham Harris, commercial director, said the site is more than a music portal. He explained the retailer "wanted to create an exciting and easy-to-use entertainment shop that Tesco customers of all ages and technical ability can use and trust".
The site's older files will still be protected by digital rights management (DRM), although all its newer MP3 tracks will be DRM-free.
The retailer has promised pricing would be competitive and said clubcard points will be available on all purchases.
It also hopes to offer downloadable films and games, as Mr Harris said: "Our music offering is just the start of an exciting journey for our customers."
The success of iTunes has been attributed in part to the huge success of parent company Apple's range of iPods.
