Fuzzy logic?

Web 2.0

15 April 2008

French website, Fuzz, has closed after it received a fine for deep-linking to an inaccurate story, it has been reported.

The site's founder, Eric Dupin was fined €2,500 (£2,000), after a deep link from his site led to an erroneous story about Kylie Minogue.

"All sites allowing internet users to communicate with each other should measure the consequences of this decision," said Mr Dupin.

Deep-linking is the practice of creating links, which lead 'deep' into a sites' pages rather than to its home page.

He warned the decision "could create a climate of fear and insecurity detrimental to the whole economy of the internet".

Broadcasters are evaluating the practice of deep-linking as it could be used by TV listing sites to lead web users directly to unbranded content on their sites.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, founder of the World Wide Web said in a post on his W3C blog: "On the web, to make reference without making a link is possible but ineffective - like speaking but with a paper bag over your head".
