Ofcom has started its review of public service broadcasting (PSB) and revealed the amount currently invested by broadcasters.

It found the BBC spent £116 million in 2006-07 and ITV, Channel 4 and Five spent £13 million.

"Public service broadcasting is at a crossroads," said chief executive, Ed Richards.

"Viewers still want a mix of high quality UK-made content, but the traditional television model is not enough to meet all their needs."

It revealed audiences are increasingly taking advantage of new digital media to access public service content.

Ofcom highlighted four potential models for future funding. These include one option where the BBC becomes the sole provider of PSB and ITV1, Channel 4 and Five become entirely commercial.

The BBC's director of future media and technology, Ashley Highfield will leave the channel to launch Kangaroo, the joint BBC, ITV and Channel 4 digital player.
