Web users should be held responsible if they let botnets infect their computers, a leading security expert has said in comments carried by Silicon.com.

Ira Winkler, president of the Internet Security Advisors Group told a US conference: "We need to hold users responsible. ISPs should have a responsibility of making sure users aren't hosting botnets."

Ronald Teixeira, executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance, said he thought botnets are the biggest threat we face on the internet.

Also known as 'Zombies', they lay dormant on computers infected by malicious code, before waking to attack websites and PCs.

Mr Winkler was not optimistic. "The statistics are basically that we're screwed. There is no real strategy for it," he said.

The UK government has funded the introduction of computer crime units for every police force and has focused its efforts on informing the public how to protect themselves.
