Virgin Media has urged internet users to do more to ensure their wireless connections are secure.
The broadband provider has warned personal details and documents are at risk should they fail to follow simple guidelines.
Howard Watson, chief technology officer, said: "Wireless routers can be complicated to setup and therefore potentially vulnerable to attack."
"Even if attackers don't actually connect to a wireless network, wireless data can be monitored and information can be captured."
It recommended users ignore passwords suggested by their ISP, change their security level to WPA and check connection logs to see if others have attempted to access their network.
Virgin Media, Talk Talk and BT are planning to introduce Phorm, a controversial monitoring software that will identify user's online preferences.
Despite privacy concerns, the Information Commissioner's Office has cleared the software and BT's proposed trial, provided it first asks users to 'opt-in' to the tests.
