Most businesses have banned employees from using social networking sites, Onrec has reported.
According to employment law firm, Peninsula, 69 per cent have applied a total ban and 79 per cent disciplined staff for using un-authorised access.
"Internet abuse is a growing problem that is confined not just to the likes of social network sites but can also include instant messaging, email abuse and other forms of internet mis-management," Deb Gibbons, head of employee relations said.
However, the lawyers revealed that 12 per cent of bosses admitted to checking their profile within company time.
Some firms have preferred a partial ban, although Ms Gibbons supported employers who cut off access altogether.
"Why should employers pay workers to surf social network sites during company time?" she asked.
According to its analysis, social networking costs bosses £30.8 billion a year.
