Designers leave hosting to last

Web Design

08 April 2008

Web designers spend less time on the design of hosting infrastructure than they do on other parts of website design projects, research has found.

The British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) and Netbenefit commissioned a study, which found new media agencies spend 26 per cent of their time creating applications for clients' sites, 27 per cent on design and only ten per cent on hosting infrastructure.

"Agencies and hosting providers should work together throughout the project," suggested chief operations officer, Jonathan Robinson.

"A common mistake is to put off a project’s hosting considerations until the last minute when the design and application has already been created and opportunities missed."

Of the agencies that took part, only 17 per cent thought that hosting providers were always aware what their clients' site was trying to achieve.

Much of current web-design theory is influenced by the work of Jesse James Garrett and his book, The Elements of User Experience.
