Cyber criminals are targeting social networking sites, Sky News has reported.

It cited an internal security report from security company, Symantec, which claimed two networks were the target of 91 per cent of malicious website attacks.

"We're not saying don't use these sites," said Lee Sharrocks, consumer sales director. "They're there to be used. But think carefully about information you give."

The research warned that millions of users are at risk and criminals have used techniques such as keystroke looping to record their sensitive data.

Mr Sharrocks noted: "Instead of only targeting more traditional financial-based websites with phishing scams, e-criminals are now more frequently looking to source a wide range of consumer data by compromising social networking accounts."

YouTube remains the UK's most popular social network - research from analysts, Nielsen found it had a unique audience of more than ten million.
