London is the UK's internet capital, new research has revealed.

A nationwide survey by Enhance Media documented the skills and abilities of 12,000 respondents to its, How 'e' are you? test.

London topped the regional results, followed by Canterbury, Cambridge, Swindon, Chelmsford, Glasgow, Milton Keynes and Sheffield.

The assessment looked at 30 internet activities including using a search engine, subscribing to a RSS feed and uploading a video to YouTube.

The national average score was 53/100 - workers in IT jobs performed best and achieved an average of 75.

Torquay performed worst, followed by Bournemouth, Twickenham and Peterborough.

Surprisingly, the test found students were least web-savvy and scored an average of only 48.

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk highlighted a problem with telecoms infrastructure in rural areas. "There are a lot of people and small businesses out there who are not able to access the benefits of broadband," he told the Eastern Daily Press.
