Siemens, the German electronics company, has the most effective corporate website, according to a new poll.

The second FT Bowen Craggs index of corporate website effectiveness has revealed how top brands' sites have performed.

Siemens, it found, "continues to stand out not only because it has a huge but highly coherent web presence, but because of the attention to detail".

BP, in second place, was the best UK site and polled ahead of Royal Dutch Shell, Nokia and IBM. The poll's organisers noted the importance of navigation, relevance and use of technology in sites' designs.

It expects to see greater up-take of web 2.0 influences such as blogs and online communities but stressed, "imaginative use of less bandwidth hungry tools can be at least as valuable".

IBM is about to launch a new integration of 2.0 technology, it is developing a private realm of virtual world, Second Life, behind its corporate firewall.
