Social network, MySpace, has launched a new music service to rival iTunes, with the support of three of the biggest record labels.

MySpace Music will allow users of the social networking site to buy songs and listen to music from Sony BMG, Warner Music Group and Universal.

"Today represents the beginning of a new chapter in the story of modern music," said Chris DeWolfe, co-founder. "We're proud to announce the marriage of the world's biggest collection of music content to the world’s most popular music community."

The service will give listeners access to personalised content and will be in direct competition with Apple's online store.

The social network has created what it describes as a "fully integrated 360 degree global music solution".

Earlier reports from the Silicon Valley Insider blog, which claimed Universal Music Group had agreed to settle for $100 million in its ongoing lawsuit, have been confirmed by a post on Reuters' MediaFile blog.
