BT has claimed 82 towns will benefit from its latest internet network by the end of April, Computer Shopper has reported.
The telecoms company will switch on exchanges to its next-generation 21CN network and plans to upgrade 868 across the country.
Known as Wholesale Broadband Connect, the network could enable connections of up to 24Mb/sec, although actual speeds are expected to be much slower.
The company hopes it will "allow communications providers to tailor services for their end user customers, opening the door to much more end user control, choice and flexibility".
If successful, the upgrade could treble some users' speeds and allow media providers to include additional internet video content on their sites.
However, BT has warned "distance from the exchange, internal wiring, interference from electrical appliances and other factors will continue to affect an end user's broadband speed".
The first UK town to switch to a digital only TV signal was Whitehaven in Cumbria.
