Google's board is fighting a shareholder proposal to ban internet censorship, Computer World has reported.

In a statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the internet giant said it would vote against a proposal, which would require it to ensure freedom of access to the internet.

New York City Comptroller William Thomson submitted the proposals, which claimed technology companies in the US had "failed to develop adequate standards by which they can conduct business with authoritarian governments while protecting human rights".

A spokesperson for his office revealed that similar proposals were voted down last year.

Mr Thompson told Computer World both Yahoo! and Google operate on the basis of users' trust.

"By allowing these countries to censor the information the users receive, that trust is broken," he said.

Yahoo! executives were recently criticised for their role in releasing information on Chinese dissidents, who were later arrested.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18528296-ADNFCR
