ISPs 'can't keep up'

UK internet service providers (ISPs) are having difficulty keeping up with popular demand for a new generation of media player, according to an industry commentator.

Michael Phillips of Broadband Choices explained that the players have broadened the appeal of the web's multimedia services and put pressure on ISPs.

"I think that services like the BBC iPlayer, 4OD and Sky Anytime have taken high-end web behaviour to the masses," he said.

"I think that's why consumers are expecting more of their ISPs and potentially ISPs weren't expecting customers to start doing these high-intensity web surfing activities."

A recent survey by uSwitch revealed that nearly five million web users felt short-changed by their provider.

The survey illustrated a wider frustration with customer service levels – it showed one in two customers was unhappy with the treatment they received from their provider.
