The works of Shakespeare, in their original quarto format will be digitised and published online for web users to enjoy.
The Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, together with the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington DC, will create the archive, which reunites 75 pre-1641 editions of Shakespeare's plays into a single online collection.
The project is partly funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee. Its executive secretary Dr Malcolm Read said: "This project demonstrates the great potential of collaboration between our two countries in the field of digitisation."
The project will last one year and its website will feature an interactive interface that lets users overlay text images and compare items side-by-side.
"It brings together skills, expertise and important scholarly content in ways that we hope and trust will deliver major benefits to scholars on both sides of the Atlantic," commented Dr Read.
Web designers are keen to incorporate interactive functions in their page designs, as it allows visitors to use web sites as tools to help them find further information.
