The best new websites "empower shoppers", according to the vice president of a leading consumer retail team.

A joint IMRG Capgemini report into the success of online retail revealed many companies are refreshing their websites.

Anthoula Madden from Capgemini noted they were now hosting consumer reviews to stay competitive, Computer Weekly has reported.

"The best sites are empowering shoppers with vast amounts of detailed information," she is quoted as saying.

The company's online sales index noted a 12.4 per cent drop in the sale of electricals, although beers, wines and spirits experienced huge growth (38 per cent) and clothing, footwear and accessories were also improved (3.2 per cent).

Ms Madden noted that many firms have updated their presence since Christmas and they are "doing everything they can to enable customers to be entirely comfortable in their shopping choices".

Online spending reached a record £4.2 billion in February, equivalent to £69 per person and she advised that e-retailers "need to be even more creative to keep existing customers and attract new users".
