Small businesses often get complacent and ignore their websites, an internet specialist has said.
Chairman of the British Computer Society's Internet Specialist Group, Howard Gerlis, said often they experience an "initial excitement" but then allow their sites to "languish very quickly".
"A good website must catch the eye and provide good content which is quick and easy to find," he said.
According to research from Netflare, nearly a quarter of small businesses have not updated their site since launch, which on average was four years ago.
Mr Gerlis went on to explain that most small business owners "need convincing that it's worth the financial investment".
UK consumers are now better connected to these sites than ever before - research by Ofcom has found that women use the internet more than men and recent reports are of a generation "brought up online".
