Facebook's second chapter in decline

Web 2.0

20 March 2008

Social network Facebook has seen its visitor numbers fall for the second month in a row.

According to provisional figures from Nielsen Online, released to New Media Age, the site had 200,000 less unique visitors in February.

It attributed its January visitor count drop, from 8.9 to 8.5 million users, to the Christmas period - after February's fall the figure has again reduced to 8.3 million.

In separate analysis, Nielsen revealed that YouTube had replace Wikipedia as the UK's most visited and noted the rise of video sites.

"Whilst the majority of the most popular social media sites are the networks, most of the fastest growing are video sites, which points to video being the biggest star of the 2008 social media scene," said analyst, Alex Burmaster.

Despite its recent drop, Facebook has seen huge increases in its unique audience. Over the last 12 months it is second only to PerfSpot, the sector's fastest growing social network.
