Massive mobile web search has begun

Web 2.0

20 March 2008

Search company Google has observed an acceleration of internet activity among mobile phone users, Reuters has reported.

Matt Waddell, a product manager for Google said that it is experiencing a "watershed moment in terms of mobile internet usage".

He argued that growth was fuelled by the growing availability of flat-rate data plans, better mobile web browsers and his company's search tools.

"We are actually seeing a 20 per cent increase in the number of searches by people," he said.

"Not only are we are seeing increased user satisfaction but also greater usage."

The recent launch of Apple's iPhone has prompted a range of imitations, which also feature large screens and full web browsing capabilities.

Mr Waddell commented that iPhone users make as many as 50 times more Google searches than those with other handsets.
