Time for Euro Google
Search Engines
14 March 2008
The EU has approved funding for a Euro search engine to rival Google.
Headed by the Thomson group, the QUAERO programme will receive €99 million from the French government and focus on the processing of content.
"The objective of the QUAERO project is to improve key technologies for processing digital multimedia content," said EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes.
"We are confident that the positive contribution the program will make to European research will outweigh any distortion of competition caused by the aid."
The project is designed to carry out automatic searches and includes support for new multi-lingual formats.
It was launched three years ago and divided into QUAERO, meaning "I search," in Latin, and the German-led project THESEUS.
Google remains the most powerful search engine and the firm has recently launched Ad Manager, a free ad serving application.
