Hackers have infected more than 10,000 web pages looking for passwords, PC Advisor has reported.
Researchers from security company MacAfee reported the attack, which appears to originate from Chinese servers and is designed to steal passwords used in online games.
The attackers used JavaScript code to redirect visitor's browsers to an invisible attack from the foreign servers.
Craig Schmugar, a researcher with McAfee's Avert Lab was not sure how many sites had been infected. "Given how quickly some of these attacks have come on, it does seem like some automation has gone on," he said.
The code was designed to steal gaming passwords - according to PC World, many online gaming resources can be stolen and sold for profit.
Internet users should avoid submitting passwords to sites they do not recognise and pages they have been redirected to.
The Information Commissioner's Office has launched a new data protection strategy which explains how it "will focus its data protection resources on situations where there is the greatest risk of harm to individuals".
