New research has shown that European subscribers to internet TV have more than doubled in the last 12 months.

A study by research firm Informa Telecoms & Media has showed there are more than 12.34 million viewers signed up, an increase of more than 100 per cent since 2006.

"2007 was a watershed year for IPTV as many western European telcos launched full packages," the study said.

France is the current European leader - its telecoms companies bundled the service along with broadband.

The UK however, has been slow on the uptake according to additional research by media law firm, Wiggin.

"People are still familiar with the idea of sitting down at the appointed time to watch their favourite programme, and to some extent people like having their lives dictated by scheduling," Alexander Ross, partner in the firm told the Times.
