Online shoppers like to see user-generated content (UGC) on the commercial sites they visit, according to a leading internet commentator.

Ben Camm-Jones, news editor of Web-User, said that people like to read the opinions of others before they make a purchase.

"It is incredible the amount of importance your average consumer places on these sort of things," he commented.

Retailers are encouraging feedback from buyers in forums and blog posts, and "user-generated content is already being used by advertisers," he said.

However, Mr Jones urged internet users to be cautious: "You have got to make sure that it is not being manipulated by other people or competitors."

Internet retailer eBay has decided to remove the function that allows users to leave negative or neutral feedback.

Mr Jones expressed his concern at the announcement because "when fundamental changes are made to any successful business, you do have to question why they are doing it".
