Social networks could become content platforms according to new research from Entertainment Media Research and media law firm, Wiggin.

The 2008 Digital Entertainment Survey revealed that one in four users believe the sites could become the main route through which they access information.

In its Entertainment Activity Audit the survey revealed that "traditional media ranks highest among the total UK sample," however browsing social networks is increasingly users' activity of choice.

"It goes to show just how embedded social networks have become in consumers leisure lives, and how social networking has become truly mainstream," the survey found.

It also went on to suggest that social networking sites are "an essential place to be" for brands and revealed how users feel about the role of online marketing.

Take up of on-demand content is still low, according to the study and 70 per cent of users would prefer to access it free of charge with un-skippable ads, while 15 per cent said they would pay a subscription to avoid advertising altogether.
