We7, the free music download site, has signed a deal with Sony BMG, which will make thousands more tracks available online.

Web users will soon be able to stream and download tracks from Mark Ronson, Kasabian and the Foo Fighters in return for watching short advertisements

"We are in the business of embracing a multitude of new ways our music can reach audiences," said Ged Doherty, chairman of Sony UK and Ireland.

"Our deal with We7 is an important step forward in offering fans greater flexibility in how they consume music."

The site has had more than two million tracks downloaded and because of its success has been nominated for digital achievement of the year at the Music Week awards.

The move to ad-supported downloads is a compromise for record labels who have found it difficult to contain piracy but wish to explore the digital market place.
