Microsoft has launched a series of developer tools at its annual MIX conference in Las Vegas.
In addition to a trial version of Internet Explorer (IE) 8, it released betas of Silverlight 2 and Expression 2, which it hopes will interest the web design community.
Silverlight 2 is an upgrade of the company's software that lets developers built applications that are compatible with different browsers.
"We want to get the web pages to look the same on all the browsers," said Dean Hachamovitch, IE general manager. "Today, differences between browsers simply waste too much developer time."
Chief executive Steve Ballmer spoke at the conference and took the opportunity to poke fun at the new Apple Air laptop and chat with developers.
Ballmer is keen for more web professionals to use his company's software, as is Hachamovitch.
"We want to make sure we are interoperating the standard the same way developers are," he said.
