Latest research shows that social networking web portals can be a "real business platform", according to one internet executive.

David Lavenda, vice president of marketing and product strategy at WorkLight, cited research from Nielsen Online, which confirmed their popularity amongst UK web users.

"This makes their use for internal corporate collaboration and professional networking an attractive and viable business tool," he said.

Nielsen found more than 20 million Brits have visited at least one of the sites in January and Facebook is now the third most popular.

Internet analyst Alex Burmaster commented: "Social media is a growing and varied culture, providing a wealth of entertainment, information and connections for the increasing number of people being drawn in by its power."

Its research went on to reveal that PerfSpot was the fastest growing social network and video sites are set to be "the biggest star of the 2008 social media scene".
