Virgin Media has boosted the speed of some of its customers' internet connections to 10 Mbps.
The company has started a major broadband upgrade program. From February, customers on the company's 'L' Tariff will get a free increase from their current 4 Mbps connections.
It supplies broadband via cable and hopes this will allow faster delivery speeds. By the end of 2008, Virgin hopes to offer speeds of 50Mbps to nine million people.
Acting chief executive officer, Neil Berkett said its network gave it "natural superiority" over other providers.
"We've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with our cable network, and we will continue to look for new ways to satisfy the growing demand for even faster broadband in the UK," he said.
In the US, a group of technology companies have formed the White Space Coalition. It hopes to open up the frequencies which exist between TV channels so they can use them to provide more wireless connections.
