Google stops 'taster' sessions

Google will apply changes to its advertising programme to stop new domains taking profits when they are 'ad tasting', MacUser has reported.

Some companies take advantage of a free five-day period before they are required to register new domains – during this time they test out different ads to see which ones work best.

"We believe that this policy will have a positive impact for users and domain purchasers across the web," said spokesperson Brandon McCormick.

One result of this practice is web users can no longer register names they want - because they are being used in one of these schemes.

Dell recently launched a lawsuit against 'typosquatters' – individuals who hijack websites with similar names to established brands and then trade them online.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) handles domain registration and allows this 'try before you buy' approach.
