BBC goes ultra-local
Web 2.0
28 January 2008
The BBC plans to launch a series of local websites that feature online localisation and mapping technology, according to reports in the Press Gazette.
In a move that could put the corporation at loggerheads with local broadcasters, the BBC service would include text, audio, and video news accessed from local maps.
"The new websites will have hyper-local capabilities using geo-tagging of content and mapping interfaces," said Ian Davies, a development director in regional newspaper production.
He described the plans, which have yet to be given the go-ahead, as "damaging", "unfair" and "a strange approach to public service media".
David Newell, director of the Newspaper Society was worried about their effect on the local press that had, he said "evolved into a successful multimedia industry in recent years".
The UK has many local broadcasters and channels - they serve specific areas with regional stories and draw from major national stories for their content.
