Ask.com, which led a recent privacy initiative, has appointed a former top exec at Google to be its European managing director, Brand Republic has reported.

Cesar Mascaraque was Google's head of strategic partnerships and business development for southern Europe and will be based in London.

He said it is "an exciting time to join" and was looking forward to building on the businesses successful model.

"I have watched the brand set itself apart from competitors by pioneering new products and offering innovative ways of bringing search to users," he added.

Ask.com has set itself aside from other search providers by agreeing to instantly delete search data. The site offers its AskEraser option, which can be selected before beginning a search session.

Google has repeatedly come under scrutiny for its collection of personal data, despite having reduced to 18 months the period it keeps search data before it is rendered anonymous.
