Online sales have increased by 54 per cent and left high street shop owners out of pocket, new research has found.

Retailers who had a poor winter season now face data from the International Retail in Media Group (IMRG) and Capgemini, which showed customers love online shopping.

The figures revealed internet sales reached £46.6 billion and were 15 per cent of the total retail spending - in the last quarter of 2007, they reached a record £15 billion.

Retail sales fell by 0.4 per cent in December, traditionally a very busy month for the high street.

IMRG chief executive officer James Rope, explained in the report: "Why would you fight the shopping crowd to buy a TV on the high street when you can arrange for it to be delivered to your home, often at a more competitive price?"

Despite being convenient, internet shopping is susceptible to dangers not found on the high street such as computer crashes and server failures.
