US computer giant Microsoft has again come under the gaze of European Commission (EC) anti-trust legislators, who have accused the corporation of abusing its dominant market position.

Two formal investigations into separate infringements of EC Treaty rules have been initiated.

The first complaint is from the European Committee for Interoperability Systems (ECIS) which has alleged the corporation has withheld a wide range of interoperability information.

The second from Opera, a competitor, has claimed the corporation has acted unfairly by tying in its Internet Explorer browser to the Windows operating system.

Representatives from the commission insist its investigation should be allowed to run its course before people presume any guilt on the part of Microsoft.

"This initiation of proceedings does not imply that the commission has proof of an infringement. It only signifies that the commission will further investigate the case as a matter of priority," it explained.

Digital piracy is a major concern for technology companies, which struggle to prevent the copying of their software.
