Wi-Max will never be the answer to the UK's broadband needs, according to one industry analyst.
A spokesperson from PointTopic said it will only ever provide a second choice or backup solution: "Actual performance of wireless can depend heavily on conditions, weather, trees and buildings get in the way – so users [are] reluctant to commit to it too heavily."
The wireless technology can transmit further than Wi-Fi but can not perform to the level of fixed-line competitors.
The UK is currently searching for ways to improve its internet provision, with industry analysts and government ministers are looking at a range of possible solutions.
Despite arriving late onto the market, Wi-Max could help Wi-Fi technology to support internet access for other services and it should be cheaper than mobile networks.
The spokesperson advised it has "one possible alternative for wide use – as a second, low-cost, cheap and cheerful connection - perhaps for teenagers or for backup".
Apple is expected to announce a 3G version of its iPhone today which will give users improved internet access.
