Radiohead have topped the UK charts with their In Rainbows album having first sold it online.
Not a new advertising route, however, the band was allowing internet users to pay whatever price they wanted for its download.
Fears that the band would lose money seem misplaced - they generated lots of publicity and as MTV has reported, "they didn't ruin the music industry in the process".
CD prices have fallen and marketing budgets in the biggest record labels have been slashed, the Economist has reported.
Radical new marketing strategies will see labels taking a cut from mobile phone sales, as they will be shipped with music pre-installed, nicknamed 'Comes with Music'.
"'Comes with Music' is a recognition that music has to be given away for free, or close to free, on the internet," it has reported Mark Mulligan from Jupiter research saying.
"In 2007 it became clear that the recorded-music industry is contracting and that it will be a very different beast from what it was in the 20th century," he added.
