Sun needs internet to shine

The Sun newspaper's website is now the world's most popular and will be generating huge amounts from its online presence, a senior media figure has said.

Jack Irvine, executive chairman of Media House and former editor of the Scottish Sun, made the announcement on BBC Radio5 Live's Wake up to the Money.

He said: "I chaired a conference last year where there were some leading News International directors there, and it was predicted that within five years 50 per cent of the Sun’s ad revenue will be coming from the web."

In Mr Irvine's opinion newspapers had to build a strong online brand otherwise, they would be "in real trouble".

Free papers have reduced tabloid sales and, according to the Sun's ex-assistant editor, Roy Greenslade, "the underlying market is just not there for the paper anymore."

The Sun's circulation figures recently dropped below three million for the first time since 1974.
