No rush for Facebook

Web 2.0

Social networking giant Facebook has been described as slow and inaccessible by a new report.

The site is synonymous with a generation of interactive web spaces thought to be pushing the boundaries of communication - not if the study from site monitors Watch Mouse is to be believed.

It found Mark Zuckerberg's creation was the slowest and most inaccessible of 104 sites. Other big name networks including Twitter, del.icio.us and Friendster, also fared badly.

The report looked at load times and created a Site Performance Index for the social networks it found listed on Wikipedia.

Almost half of those surveyed scored more than 1,000, a very poor result in terms of load times.

Mark Pors, chief technical officer, was shocked with the performance of the popular sites: "It is surprising they still have such a big fan base when they serve their users so badly."

Industry is still undecided how to use social networking - some companies have banned users from accessing personal sites while others have learnt from its use as a communication tool.
