BT has announced its latest deployment of fibre-optic cables will allow for speeds of 100Mbps.

From August this year, the new cables will be used instead of copper lines and will connect homes in Ebsfleet Valley.

The new network will offer residents the UK's fastest available connection speeds and allow for multiple connections to high definition television channels.

Steve Robertson, chief executive, said: "It will enable communication providers to gauge what demand exists for very high speed broadband, and to assess what commercial models may be appropriate in the future."

The development is one of four in the Thames Gateway and the first to introduce 'fibre to the door' technology in the UK.

New internet-based entertainment is reliant on networks, which can support fast file transfers and movie downloads.

Ofcom is still in consultation with the telecoms industry to establish how best to satisfy the future need for high-speed broadband.
