Owners of Apple's new iPhone are happy to accept a lack of features, because the handset looks and feels so good.
Jonathan Arber, spokesperson for telecoms industry advisors Ovum, said that despite not offering 3G coverage the phone is popular because most people think it looks great.
"I don't think the majority of consumers are particularly concerned about 2G versus 3G - what they want is a good user experience," he said.
UK customers are not used to paying for handsets when many companies offer them for free, a point which he acknowledged could cause potential buyers to think twice.
Mr Arber thought any purchase decision would come down to personal choice, he said: "It does have a lot of attractive features, but on the other hand it is very expensive, so it's up to the individual consumer."
Mobile handsets are increasingly equipped with full internet browsing capabilities, colour screens and PDA-like powers.
