The new year is set to herald a new slew of technologies utilising faster broadband speeds, with rich media content and innovative applications.

According to the Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA), internet-based television and new office technologies such as video conferencing will become increasingly commonplace in 2008.

An ISPA UK spokesperson explained how the continuing improvements in infrastructure would have a direct impact on consumers and those involved in internet marketing.

"Broadband has made these web technologies [possible] – such as streaming media, such as telephone over the internet, such as not only downloading movies and music but also consuming movies and music," he commented.

"There are developments going on all the time to improve connectivity, and that has a consequence of driving technological innovation on the content and applications side."

"You will see more TV being delivered over the internet – not just download TV, but maybe also linear TV; so literally like people browse the internet right now."

Price comparison site uSwitch forecasts that the UK will have 21 million internet connections by 2010, with just one million of these – or four per cent – from dial-up access.
