Small businesses looking to move into the online marketplace need to ensure they have the right infrastructure in place.

That is the advice of Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online, who says it is essential to ensure security is in place.

With firms liable for handling other people’s confidential information, Mr Neate said companies must be clear on their responsibilities.

"There are now regulations that have been brought in by the credit card companies,” he explained.

"If you are not an expert in relation to computers and computer security and you have your own e-commerce site or server, then you need to get advice. If you are taking people's credit card details and transacting online, make sure you have listened to the correct advice," he added.

Get Safe Online says that almost half – 44 per cent – of small businesses in the UK have been the victim of cyber crime.
