The demands placed on organisation's technological networks are set to spiral in 2008, as new trends and take-up of existing innovations place a greater strain than ever on companies.

With the advent of Web 2.0 and the impulse to link up communities, organisations and departments as never before, market analysts Intelliden says new challenges will arise.

"Rapid adoption of unified communications and Web 2.0 technologies driven by the Millennial Generation has transformed the role of enterprise networks," the firm said in its report.

Outlining the next steps for network-driven companies, Intelliden said that security would be paramount.

"The new world of communications means greater collaboration and richer services," the authors concluded.

"It also means more complex layers of technology, and more security threats and vulnerabilities."

In addition, Intelliden believes that 2008 will see digital media companies like Skype, Google or MySpace offer broader competition to telecoms firms and ISPs.
