Blog turns ten

Web Design, Web 2.0

19 December 2007

It is a decade since the first use of the word "weblog", the forerunner of the proliferating phenomenon that is blogs.

First created by Jorn Barger in December 1997 to describe the logging of interesting website he had seen, Mr Barger updated people on his Robot Wisdom web page.

As a piece of shorthand for 'logging' different 'websites', the term has since spawned millions of imitators and the term weblog, or 'blog', has evolved to encompass a wider concept.

According to blog analysts Technorati, there are now more than 70 million different web logs, which have become a Web 2.0 phenomenon.

New tools and widgets have appeared to make the production of blogs much easier and the interest in news, diaries and journals kept on the web has seen them soar in popularity.

In many cases blogs now make the news themselves, with the political blog kept by Guido Fawkes among those that carries weight in political circles.

Linking together interests and ideas, blogs have also been part of the rise of individually-tailored networking sites such as Facebook or Bebo.
