The Virgin Media cable network went down for several hours, affecting both TV and internet services, it has been reported.
The company said the problem was due to 'routine maintenance', however, it was not completely solved for 12 hours.
According to a Virgin Media rep, the maintenance process knocked out DHCP address assignments for some of its servers, the Register has reported.
The company said the loss was temporary and could not establish how many customers had been affected.
"Some customers may have noticed a loss of service as short as a few minutes, many may not have seen any loss of service at all, depending on when they were online," it said.
A recent review of the broadband market by ISP Review has found that the company is second only to BT in terms of size and is used by 3.5 million customers.
Virgin's owner, Richard Branson, is currently in talks to buy the troubled lender, Northern Rock.
