Google's Wikipedia

Web 2.0

17 December 2007

Google is trialling an online publishing platform to challenge the world-renowned information resource, Wikipedia.

Instead of an anonymous page, the new Google Knol (unit of knowledge) will be a user-generated webpage which features more detailed information about its creator.

Udi Manber, vice president of engineering, writing on the company's official blog, explained some of the thinking behind the project.

"Our goal is to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it," he said.

He also made it clear that Google would not own the information and it wanted to disseminate the material as far as possible.

"Google will not ask for any exclusivity on any of this content and will make that content available to any other search engine," he said.

The company is sill awaiting the results of an inquiry into its purchase of the online advertiser, Double Click.

The Australian authorities gave the company the green light, however, the European Union could take until April next year before a decision is made.
