Microsoft has bought Multimap, one of the leading online mapping services.
The firm is one of the UK's top tech companies and produces a publicly available personal mapping service. It will be integrated into the Online Services Group and work as part of the Virtual Earth and Search teams.
Sharon Baylay, general manager, said the move would help Microsoft develop its mapping and location platform services.
"This acquisition will play a significant role in the future growth of our search business and presents a huge opportunity to expand our platform business beyond the UK and globally," she said.
Keith Kelisky of MultiMap was equally buoyant and hoped the partnership would "give people everywhere new, exciting and fun ways to get from point A to point B".
The Information Commissioner's Office hosted a conference yesterday entitled Surveillance Society: Turning Debate into Action and launched a privacy impact assessment for the UK.
