In the UK and the US women use the internet more often than men, according to a new international report.
In the US over half of web users are female and while figures in the UK suggest the web is equally used by both sexes, the latest Ofcom report found nearly 60 per cent of users are female.
The second annual International Communications Market report compared the UK with 11 other countries. It found we have the highest take-up of digital TV and the best digital radio coverage.
Ed Richards, Ofcom chief executive, said: "The report shows that convergence, bundling and the move to digital communications is a powerful global phenomenon."
Recent research by Nielsen/NetRatings backed up the Ofcom study and found women in the 18-34 age group spent 27 per cent more time online than men. Alex Burmaster, an analyst at the firm said there had been a big change.
"This represents a seismic shift from the early days when the internet was the domain of the techno-geek," he said.
