The European Commission has approved the investment by Amsterdam in a new fibre telecoms network.

The municipality of Amsterdam is investing in a company building a "fibre to the home" matrix, which will provide broadband access for 37 million homes.

It was decided the governing body of the Dutch town could participate in the project the same as a private investor, and the commission gave the project the green light.

Competition Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, said: "Our investigation found that the municipality of Amsterdam invests on market terms and that several private parties make significant investments in the project."

The Amsterdam municipality owns one-third of the shares of the company, two private investors another third and five housing corporations own the remaining shares.

The UK is still to decide on how to speed up its broadband access – one option would be to run fibre cables through the existing sewer networks.
